Washington DC Insurance Claim Advocates

With major insurance carriers denying nearly half of all property damage claims, it's no surprise that District property owners find the Washington DC insurance claim process daunting (Weiss Ratings, 2024).

Getting a fair settlement doesn't have to be difficult. For years, Public Adjusters have helped commercial and residential property owners in the District file property damage claims and maximize their settlements—removing the stress of dealing directly with the insurance company and making sure you get what you are owed from the insurance carrier.

What is a Public Adjuster?

A Washington DC Public Adjuster is a licensed insurance claim expert who advocates for policyholders and their property damage claims—not for the insurance company. By leveraging their insurance expertise, Public Adjusters help consumers increase their insurance settlements by an average 747% (OPPAGA, 2010).

District property owners rely on Public Adjusters to better understand their policy coverage, assess damage, and negotiate with insurance carriers. A Public Adjuster can be hired at any point during the claim process and can even reopen a claim that was previously settled or denied.

How Much Does a Public Adjuster Charge in Washington DC?

Public Adjusters charge a percentage of the final settlement amount, and the District caps Public Adjuster fees at 10% of the total insurance recovery—one of the strictest fee limits in the country (D.C. Code § 31-1631.08). Because Public Adjusters work on a contingency fee basis, your DC Public Adjuster isn't paid until you've received your settlement. There is no out-of-pocket expense for you as the policyholder.

What DC Law Requires of Your Public Adjuster

Anyone acting as a public insurance adjuster in the District must hold a license from the Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB), file a $20,000 surety bond, and work under a written contract on a form approved by the Commissioner. You also have the right to cancel that contract until midnight on the third business day after you sign it.
